AI technology: Microsoft and Epic combine forces to enhance healthcare

AI Technology, particularly generative AI, has tremendous potential in addressing major challenges in healthcare. Epic and Microsoft are at the forefront of this initiative, working to enhance patient care and tackle issues like clinician burnout and staffing shortages.

By combining Microsoft’s cloud and AI technologies with Epic’s expertise in healthcare and clinical workflows, we aim to address various problems faced by clinicians. We’re expanding our strategic initiative to integrate AI technologies across the Epic electronic health record (EHR) ecosystem to improve patient care, operational efficiency, healthcare experiences, and the financial integrity of health systems worldwide.

Our goal is to quickly launch multiple copilot solutions that leverage the Microsoft Cloud and our AI technologies to address urgent staffing, financial, and clinical access challenges. Epic will display many of these new capabilities at its annual Users Group Meeting today, including:

  • Improving clinician productivity with note summarization: New solutions are designed to enhance clinical efficiency and speed up documentation with suggested text and in-context summaries.
  • Boosting clinician productivity with embedded ambient clinical documentation: Epic will feature its DAX Express AI technology integrated into the Epic Hyperdrive platform and Haiku mobile app. Nuance has also joined Epic’s third-party vendor program.
  • Increasing administrative efficiency by lowering manual labor: AI-powered solutions will be showcased that offer medical coding staff suggestions based on EHR clinical documentation to optimize coding and billing processes.
  • Advancing medicine for improved patient results: Epic is using Azure OpenAI Service for generative AI exploration to fill clinical evidence gaps using real-world data and study rare diseases.

We’re integrating Azure OpenAI Service and Nuance technologies into the Epic ecosystem. This strategic collaboration will enhance AI solutions for healthcare organizations and patients.

By 2025, a shortage of 90,000 doctors is predicted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Many clinicians also face burnout. Healthcare providers struggle with financial stress while striving to deliver quality care. As per McKinsey & Company, a quarter of U.S. health expenditure is on administrative costs, which technology could reduce.

A recent survey showed an emphasis on AI solutions for improving operational and clinical efficiency. Areas of interest include operational optimization, health management, diagnostic imaging, population health management, value-based care, patient engagement, and clinical research.

Further collaborations between Epic and Microsoft aim to improve integrations, such as incorporating Azure OpenAI Service into Epic’s EHR. This includes features for automatic message drafting, interactive data analysis, and more. Additionally, a collaboration with Nuance® Dragon® Ambient eXperience™ Express (DAX Express™) aims to expand AI capabilities for users.

The partnership between Epic and Microsoft seeks to rapidly implement generative AI technology in healthcare, addressing ongoing issues in the industry.

What are the pressing needs in the healthcare industry that generative AI can address?

  • Generative AI has the potential to address several pressing needs in the healthcare industry. One of the most significant challenges is the shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly in rural areas. Generative AI can help alleviate this problem by automating routine tasks, freeing up healthcare professionals to focus on more complex cases.
  • Another pressing need in healthcare is the need for more accurate and timely diagnoses. Generative AI can help with this by analyzing vast amounts of patient data to identify patterns and make predictions. This can lead to earlier diagnoses and more effective treatments.
  • Patient outcomes are also a major concern in healthcare. Generative AI can help improve outcomes by identifying patients who are at high risk of developing complications or adverse reactions to treatments. This can enable healthcare professionals to intervene early and prevent problems before they become more serious.
  • Finally, healthcare costs are a significant challenge for patients, providers, and payers. Generative AI can help reduce costs by identifying inefficiencies in healthcare delivery and suggesting ways to streamline processes. This can lead to more efficient use of resources and ultimately lower costs for everyone involved.

Accelerating the positive impact of generative AI in healthcare?

  1. Microsoft and Epic can accelerate the positive impact of generative AI in healthcare by leveraging the strengths of both companies. Microsoft’s expertise in AI and cloud computing can be combined with Epic’s experience in healthcare software to create innovative solutions that can improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.
  2. Generative AI can create personalized treatment plans for patients based on their medical history, genetic information, and other relevant data. By using machine learning algorithms, generative AI can analyze large amounts of data and identify patterns that can be used to develop more effective treatments.
  3. The collaboration between Microsoft and Epic can also help address some of the most pressing issues in healthcare, such as the shortage of healthcare professionals and the need for more efficient and cost-effective care. By automating certain tasks and processes, generative AI can help healthcare providers save time and resources, allowing them to focus on providing better care to their patients.
  4. Overall, the expanded collaboration between Microsoft and Epic has the potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry by accelerating the adoption of generative AI and creating innovative solutions that can improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, and address some of the most pressing issues facing healthcare providers today.

Moving Forward with AI Technology

As we continue to navigate the labyrinth of healthcare complexities, it’s clear that the collaboration of Microsoft and Epic in the field of generative AI is not merely an advancement but a necessity. This partnership signifies a unified effort to transform healthcare, amplifying the potential of AI to address some of the industry’s most pressing challenges.

The confluence of the technological expertise of Microsoft and the healthcare proficiency of Epic lays the groundwork for a future where healthcare is not only more accessible, but also more efficient and personalized. Generative AI offers the promise of predictive analytics, driving early diagnosis and proactive treatment, ultimately leading to an improved patient outcome.
